This VOW of the week is a special treat.
But not for the reasons you are thinking.
Real talk--I really like the sound of this song. The course is super catchy and the beat will keep your head movin'. Not to mention Hwaji has some pretty good flow on the track so even though I didn't really process the entirety of the lyrics, I found myself appreciating him as a rapper.
So when I was sitting around trying to think of what the VOW should be this song came to mind, naturally, right? So I was doing my thing and listening to the song carefully as I always do (despite my inability to understand most Korean) when something hit me....
THIS SONG IS ENTIRELY IN ENGLISH.
Me upon my realization...
Despite listening to this song numerous times it never occurred to me that this man was speaking English the ENTIRE time. In my mind, it was like any other Korean song that I've listen to that was in Korean with random sprinklings of English--it's like my brain rejected the possibility this song was only in English. The possible reason?
I can't comprehend most of the song even though it is in English.
At least I couldn't before listening a number times with concentrated effort. Mind you, this song is also full of gaming references so that might be why I didn't understand what he was talking about for like 70% of the song....but I still feel like that's a bit much considering, again, the song is IN ENGLISH.
Though this could be exactly what he wants.
I came across this artist by chance as he doesn't seem to be SUPER well known--but he seems like a bit a character.
When desperately looking for (and failing--sorry 🙏) to find a way to let you guys listen to the full VOW via Youtube, I came across this video where he talks about each track of his album. In the video, he explains the reason he made this song entirely in English is because he has been "too nice" to his fans by letting them understand his lyrics....
Yeah.
So this could be the reason why, to me, the English of this song is almost absolute nonsense.
(Though if I'm totally fair, there are plenty of songs by American singers that I can't understand either...but still)
I'm really on the fence as to whether this level of incoherency is intentional (to confuse his fans like he said) or if he just doesn't have that great of a command of English (I can't really find much about his background because he still seems to be somewhat underground) but regardless I'm still a bit shook I never noticed this.
I guess I've been listening to primarily Korean music for too long since I didn't even consider the possibility the song might be entirely in English...
Regardless, though, you can take a listen and decide if you can make sense of the entirety of this song. Even if you can't, though, it is still a worthwhile song for your playlist.
So here's your VOW of the week:
